Newrys’ senior men got their first win of the season last Monday night versus Belfast Sables. After the disappointing opening game loss to Queens, Newry bounced bask with an emphatic 46 point victory over the Sables.
Newry started brightly in the first quarter with Nigel Murphy and teenage sensation Alan Gorman providing the firepower to put Newry in a 17 – 10 lead. Newrys defence really stepped in the second quarter, limiting the Sables to 4 points and powering ahead with scores from Paul Crwaley, Rory O’Keeffe and Andrew Hoefnagel. Newrys half time lead was up to 34 – 14.
The second half continued in the same vain with great Newry defence leading to easy fast break points for Anthony Greene, Peter Clarke and Declan McGreevey. Gorman continued to rack up the points and would finish with a game high 18. Newry led 58 – 19 at 3 quarters time. The final quarter was a victory lap for Newry with every player on the team eventually getting on the score sheet. Niall Byrne and Keith Doherty both chipped in with great scores to see Newry home to a 73 – 27 win.
Coach Paul Crawley was happy with the performance against a weak side but with harder tests to come knows the team have a long way to go yet.
