Newry Oaks 68 - 66 University of Ulster, Coleraine
Anthony Green Steps up with 28 points
Newry Oaks second game of the season had an eerily similar feel to their first. Up against a young university team for the second week in a row and away from home this time, Newry quickly found themselves 15 points down in the first quarter. The highflying UUC team were out-shooting and out-hustling the Newry boys. After a time out by coach David McKeown, Newry seetled down and behind the awesome scoring power of Anthony Green (who would finish the game with 28 points) Newry clawed their way back into the game, but not after a struggle.
10 down at the end of the first quarter and 15 down at the half, Newry powered their way back in the second half with outstanding offensive displays by Green, Paul Crawley and Nigel Murphy and great defence from Peter Clarke and Johnny Toner.
Going in to the final quarter, Newry trailed by only four and with two minutes left they drew level with a Rory O'Keeffe basket. Great defence followed and when Nigel Murphy put Newry up by two with 30 seconds left, UUC were rattled. Another great defensive stand followed and Newry ran out the clock deserved winners.
