After what was a fantastic first season in the Basketball Northern Ireland league, Newry Fliers U13 boys took to the court one last time for a chance to claim the league cup. Having finished second overall in the league with 29 points, Newry were to face first place team, Lisburn, in what was set to be an epic encounter.

Both teams got off to a nervous start in what was a low scoring first quarter. By the start of the second quarter, the Newry boys had settled themselves and were taking control of the floor. The excellent defence played by the Fliers allowed for turnovers to be made and points to be put on the board. By the end of the first half, the points difference was little and the second half of the game was set to be an equally matched and exciting battle.
Unfortunately for the Newry team, the Lisburn squad were just too skilled in the second half. Despite a strong offence and plenty of shots, Newry were unable to get the basketball through the unforgiving ring. It was at this stage that Lisburn took advantage of Newry’s lack of luck and broke away. Regardless of the difference in points, the Fliers kept their heads held high and fought to the bitter end.
We would like to take the opportunity to congratulate the boys on a magnificent debut season in the Basketball Northern Ireland league and we look forward to many more exciting years! Also a big thank you to the coaches for their hard work throughout the year and lastly, to the boys’ families who came to support them at games.
